April’s White Amaryllis Blooms

I live in Central Florida, growing zone 9B which is semi-tropical. Amaryllis is a subtropical bulb that belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family and is native to South Africa. It is grown as a potted plant in most parts of the United States but can also be grown outdoors year round in warm areas like Florida. The red amaryllis you buy at Christmas are FORCED bulbs.

Last week I shared my first amaryllis blooms of 2022 with my variegated pink and white flowers. My photos showed large buds on the white amaryllis next to it. Today is time for large white amaryllis flowers!

You’ll notice that the variegated large flowers are still blooming with 4 large blooms and a bud which will open soon. The weight of 4 large flowers has bent the flowers. After I finished taking photos, I cut the variegated flowers and put them in a vase in the house. Amaryllis are wonderful in a bouquet and last longer in a vase than on the plant.

I’m so happy it’s spring in Central Florida. I’m in love with amaryllis. There are many variations on the basic red flower, but many are quite expensive. I found the white and varigated amaryllis bulbs on sale several years ago at Lowe’s. Fall garden centers have forced bulbs to sell for Christmas at a reasonable price. By November they are starting to sprout in the cardboard box and are on sale. I got both of these beauties for $5 each. Now after 3 years of growth in the garden, they are multiplying and offer great shows of blooms.

Thanks for the visit. I hope you are enjoying spring in your area too!

    1. the red ones are seen everywhere and there are no white ones in my neighborhood at all – they’re like big lilies which most people say it is – but it isn’t!

  5. Sometimes white is a thing of beauty, as are your amaryllis. I didn’t realize they last longer when cut and put into a vase. I enjoyed your lovely photos.
