My End of April Flowers

I live in Central Florida, growing zone 9B which is semi-tropical. Amaryllis is a subtropical bulb that belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family and is native to South Africa. It is grown as a potted plant in most parts of the United States but can also be grown outdoors year round in warm areas like Florida. The red amaryllis you buy at Christmas are FORCED bulbs.

Since I am not supposed to drive (think lack of range of motion with a neck brace!) I don’t exactly see lots of things to photograph. Most of the time I do not have the energy. Walking in an uneven place like my yard isn’t really too smart either with my current limitations and equipment. However, within last 10 days I did take several photos of my still blooming amaryllis. (for more information about my surgery, see ACDF & My Cup Overflows)

Spring Amaryllis Blooms

First I wanted to let everyone know I am at home recuperating from my surgery on Monday. It will be a slow recovery, but I’m happy to report my pain is less than before surgery. Thanks for your support.

Last week I shared my first amaryllis blooms of white flowers. This week photos of the continued white flowers with the addition of red amaryllis. Despite the worse drought in 10 years here in Florida, I still have amaryllis blooms to lift my heart.

White Spring Flowers in my Semi-Tropical Florida Garden

Gardenias are subtropical plants that thrive in warm, humid weather. Most gardenias are hardy in zones 8-11, though a few varieties hardy to zone 7 have been developed and a few are only hardy in zones 10 and 11.  Gardenias can be grown in pots and brought inside in cold climates. See How To Care For Gardenias  for more information.

In the last month I’ve have shared lots of spring blooms. My large white amaryllis has bloomed for about a month. This last week was the final stalk with 4 or 5 blooms.

Last Day of April in The Garden

Plumeria is a genus of flowering plants in the dogbane family, Apocynaceae. Most species are deciduous shrubs or small trees. The tropical species are indigenous to Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, and as far south as Brazil, but are grown as cosmopolitan ornamentals in warm regions. Common names for plants in the genus vary widely but Frangipani or variations on that theme are the most common.

Yesterday I went into the front yard checking my plants around 10 AM. The sky was blue with white clouds and the temperature was about 81 degrees F.

I’ve shared multiple posts this year on my amazing white amaryllis which has flowered multiple times  this summer.  Right before Independence Day, my big white amaryllis produced a huge new stalk with 4 buds. I captured these photos before the winds and rain from the tropical storm Elsa bent the stalk with the open flowers to the ground.  I cut the flowers for a bouquet I shared with Amaryllis & Anthurium.  It is amazing to have spring flowers so late but I am not complaining – I would be thrilled if amaryllis bloomed all summer.  It would be like having your tulips bloom in July!
