First Frangipani Blooms of 2020

The white frangipani (Plumeria alba) is a deciduous plumeria tree that is native to tropical areas 

 

(Plumeria plants (Plumeria sp), which are also known as Lei flowers and Frangipani, are actually small trees that are native to tropical regions (zone 10 and 11) . It is one of the plants used for leis in Hawaii. It is popular here in Central Florida (zone 9B); we are semi-tropical with tropical weather most of the time. When I first moved here, I tried to find plants that could handle the occasional freeze, but nearly all of them could not take a full Florida sun.  I wasted a lot of money for the first 4 years buying plants that died.  According to the garden section at Lowe’s , “there is full sun plants and full Florida sun.”  So I bought more tropical plants that love the sun and were easy to grow. Red Amaryllis 2020

(Amaryllis is a subtropical bulb that belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family and is native to South Africa. It is grown as a potted plant in most parts of the United States but can also be grown outdoors year round in warm areas like Florida.)

 

In March I shared my next door neighbor’s amaryllis, and last week I shared photos of amaryllis at a neighbor’s yard down the street. Today I’m happy to share my first amaryllis blooms this spring right by my front porch.  My amaryllis have always bloomed later than most in my neighborhood here in central Florida.  If you’ve visited last fall, you may remember that due to a cold spell in November followed by a return to the 90’s, some of my amaryllis bloomed out of season in December.  See Mother Nature Is Confused for those blooms.  I wasn’t sure how many blooms I would have this spring but am really happy with these bright red flowers.
