Greet The Day In The Garden

I live in Central Florida, growing zone 9B which is semi-tropical. Amaryllis is a subtropical bulb that belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family and is native to South Africa. It is grown as a potted plant in most parts of the United States but can also be grown outdoors year round in warm areas like Florida. Amaryllis sold at Christmas are FORCED bulbs. Blooming season is January to June.

If I want to enjoy the garden in the summer here in central Florida, I usually go out early in the morning. The heat and humidity in July is extreme, and the extreme brightness of the sun during the day makes taking photos much harder. This morning I went out just after sunrise to greet the day.

Sky Watch Thursday With Flowers

One of my favorite linky parties is Sky Watch Thursday. The skies shared cover the range from sunrise to sundown and lots of beauty in between. Today my post is my view of the Florida blue skies over flowers. First is the view from the front yard over my frangipani tree. It was late afternoon and my front yard was in shade. (My house faces east and the sun crosses my house mid day.)

Last Day of April in The Garden

Plumeria is a genus of flowering plants in the dogbane family, Apocynaceae. Most species are deciduous shrubs or small trees. The tropical species are indigenous to Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, and as far south as Brazil, but are grown as cosmopolitan ornamentals in warm regions. Common names for plants in the genus vary widely but Frangipani or variations on that theme are the most common.

Yesterday I went into the front yard checking my plants around 10 AM. The sky was blue with white clouds and the temperature was about 81 degrees F.

January Flowers

The weather here in central Florida was mild at the beginning of the month. Then when that big snow storm blew over the southeast, it brought a cold front down to us. Here in my area we had our lowest temperature so far this winter. Our low Tuesday night was 39 degrees F. Above us the counties had freezing temperatures.  Below us it was a little warmer. Unfortunately the south west side of Florida had multiple tornadoes and some areas had extensive damage.  No damage in my area just a wild cold rain with high wind gusts.  After 2 days of cooler temperatures, our highs and lows went back up.  I still have flowers growing and I’m happy.

7:30 AM Thursday

Last Thursday was cooler after the previous days with highs in the 90″s F (this is Florida folks!).  I went into the front yard about 7:30 am with my camera. Blue skies and lower humidity make me very happy.  I find it easier to take photos outside early am or late afternoon before sunset.  The bright Florida sun midday can wash out colors in flowers.

Trumpet Honeysuckle on the Arbor

The name “honeysuckle” can refer to any of the almost 200 species in Lonicera, the honeysuckle genus, not to mention all the varieties within each species. They vary considerably in appearance, growth habit and exuberance. Trumpet honeysuckle does not have the fragrance of most honeysuckles but makes up for it with ostentatious beauty with their clusters of long, red trumpets joined at their bases.  Here in central Florida my Florida native, trumpet honeysuckle, blooms all year.
