A Glorious South Florida Sunset

Life is very hectic this week as I try to please both the requirements of selling my house and the actions necessary in buying the condo. Almost daily I review and initial addendums or changes to the condo contract. Yesterday I spent the morning having two inspections of my house for the buyer. I have driven 2 hours each way to Lakeland last Saturday and again Tuesday. Tuesday I attended the inspection of the condo. To say I’m not taking photos is an understatement. Thanks to Beverly for sharing her incredibly colorful sunset. Enjoy!

Beverly’s January of Orchids & Sky

Today’s photos were taken by my friend, Beverly, who lives in tropical Plantation, Florida in South Florida. She’s shared her beautiful orchids before. I love orchids, but I can’t grow them!

I’ve shared Beverly’s orchids several times before. She has plants hanging around the outside of her home in Broward County which is a tropical growing zone. (Ft. Lauderdale, FL is in Broward.) This last month has been a wonderful time for orchid blooms. The light purple with a dark center started blooming at the end of December and has continued right up to this week.

For many years I lived in South Florida. I moved to greater Miami back 40 years ago.  Later I moved slightly north to the greater Ft. Lauderdale area.  I have many friends in Dade County, Broward County and even just north to Palm Beach County and love visiting my favorite spots when I come back. Read More

Flamingo Gardens & Museum

Flamingo Gardens & Wildlife Sanctuary
3750 South Flamingo Road
Davie, FL 33330-1614

Flamingo Gardens was originally founded as Flamingo Groves, a citrus orchard, in 1927 by Floyd L. and Jane Wray. The Wrays came to Florida in 1925 and were deeply intrigued with the horticultural possibilities of the subtropical locale. They purchased 320 acres of land around and including Long Key in the Everglades. On January 2, 1927, Floyd L. Wray incorporated Flamingo Groves, beginning what was to become one of the first botanical gardens and tourist attractions in South Florida.

The Floyd L. Wray Memorial Foundation was established in 1969 by Mrs. Wray, in honor of her late husband, to preserve the core property for future generations and emphasize the history of the Florida Everglades. The name was changed to Flamingo Gardens, and the gardens were preserved and  expanded. In 1990, the Everglades Wildlife Sanctuary opened with the Bird of Prey Center, followed by the half-acre Free-flight Aviary featuring the 5 ecological zones of South Florida. One of the first of its kind in the country, the sanctuary gave residence to permanently injured or non-releasable Florida native wildlife.

Welcome to Miami!

Back in my 20’s, I moved from Tennessee to Miami, Florida.  Miami is an international city filled with multiple cultures and of course beautiful weather.  I fell in love with Florida back then and lived in greater Miami and greater Ft. Lauderdale for many years.  I moved to the west coast of Florida back in 2008, but I love to go visit friends in South Florida.
