April Morning

The white frangipani (Plumeria alba) is a deciduous plumeria tree that is native to tropical areas.

Magnolia grandiflora, Southern Magnolia, is a native of Florida and the southeastern U.S. It is one of the most widely grown trees in Florida and also one of the most widely cultivated Magnolias in the world. It is a large, stately, evergreen tree that can grow 30 to 80 feet tall with canopies spreading 30 to 50 feet wide.

Last week I went into the front yard one morning and examined the frangipani tree for leaves. Due to the late cold spells in March, they are very small.  In previous years, I ‘ve had frangipani blooms before the end of April.  With the temperatures in the 80’s, I’ll watch to see if they grow quickly.

Frangipani Bouquet in June

Life continues to be complicated here in Florida. Yesterday The Tampa Bay Times reported:

For the third consecutive day, Florida hit the highest number of single-day coronavirus cases recorded, adding 2,581 over 24 hours.

Most of the cases are down in South Florida in Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties, but you can’t assume you’re safe here in Tampa Bay.  I’ve ventured out a few times in the last week wearing my mask, but I think I need to retreat and stay put as the 2nd phase of the virus shoots the numbers ever higher. So let’s stop and look at a happy thing.

For me, simple things can bring me great pleasure.  For instance, a few flowers from the yard arranged in a thrift store bowl can make a bright spot in the home.   I love my blooms of white and yellow frangipani (plumeria).  Today’s small bouquet is several frangipani flowers and several hibiscus green leaves from the yard.  I used a vintage napkin as a table scarf. I filled a vintage bowl with rocks and water to hold the tiny arrangement

(Plumeria plants (Plumeria sp), which are also known as Lei flowers and Frangipani, are actually small trees that are native to tropical regions (zone 10 and 11) . It is one of the plants used for leis in Hawaii. It is popular here in Central Florida (zone 9B); we are semi-tropical with tropical weather most of the time. When I first moved here, I tried to find plants that could handle the occasional freeze, but nearly all of them could not take a full Florida sun.  I wasted a lot of money for the first 4 years buying plants that died.  According to the garden section at Lowe’s , “there is full sun plants and full Florida sun.”  So I bought more tropical plants that love the sun and were easy to grow. August Gardens

It’s a hot, humid summer here in central Florida. I haven’t shared that many photos of my tropical garden this summer as it’s taken time to rebuild after the loss of so many plants in January due to 2 freezing nights. I replaced my huge dead red hibiscus with a new small bush back in the spring, and the little guy produces pretty red flowers almost daily.

The First Frangipani Blooms of the Season

Yesterday I was excited to see my first frangipani (plumeria) blooms of the season. I am just slowly learning about this tropical plant. Several years ago when I first started planning my front yard, I attended a plant sale of a local garden club. I bought several plants and as I paid, I was told everyone who purchased today got a free frangipani. Then they handed me what looked like a stick. Read More
