Even though we are in winter and many of us have snowy yards, today I want to discuss making our gardens useful places to visit. For many of us, our gardens often feel like a separate outdoor space that isn’t used that often. The problem people have is that perhaps they find that their outdoor space isn’t really a user friendly space. You may have a large lawned area, perhaps planted a few plants at some point, and maybe it is good for sitting out when the sun shines or watching your children play. Now consider how it can be a space that can be used for all kinds of things.

Ideas For A Backyard Shady Spot
It is really hot here in Florida – not like regular summer hot and humid, this summer is a hot, sticky oven. At my age, I only spend time outside early hours or just before sunset. My skin will fry and I’m miserable. I was listening to my neighbor’s children at play in the backyard. I like the sound. Then I started thinking, are they wearing sunscreen? Are they going to burn?
I remember when I was a little girl in Tennessee, we had a clothesline for drying clothes. I used to help hang them up and bring them in. An old sheet and a few rocks made a tent over the clothesline. Do you make shade for your children’s play – a little place for them to read and get away?
