Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park opened in April 1995 after 13 years of planning and fundraising by the West Michigan Horticultural Society. In 1990, Fred & Lena Meijer were asked by Betsy Borre for their support, and they embraced the concept of a major cultural attraction centering around horticulture & sculpture. The original vision has turned into a top cultural destination in the Midwest, known internationally for the quality of the art and gardens.

During the weekend of October 14 to 16th my nephew, Robert, and his wife, Lisa, had a short holiday in Grand Rapids, Michigan. They enjoyed several special events and spent a day at the Frederick Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. Thank you Robert and Lisa for sharing your photos from your visit to the Meijer Gardens. The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation and Greenfield Village is a large indoor and outdoor history museum complex and a National Historic Landmark in the Detroit suburb of Dearborn, Michigan. The Henry Ford Museum opened in 1929. It is based on Henry Ford’s efforts to preserve items of historical interest and portray the Industrial Revolution with the property, homes, machinery, exhibits, and Americana of historically significant items as well as common memorabilia. It is the largest indoor-outdoor museum complex in the United States and is visited by over 1.7 million people each year. Read More

The Detroit Institute of Arts, known affectionately as the DIA, is a world renowned art museum. Founded by prominent Detroit citizens in 1885, the museum opened on September 1, 1888 in a building on Jefferson Avenue. In 1927 the museum moved to its current location on Woodward Avenue, just north of Warren Street.  The Beaux-Arts building, designed by Paul Cret, was immediately referred to as the “temple of art.” Two wings were added in the 1960’s and 1970’s, and a major renovation and expansion that began in 1999 was completed in 2007. St. Petersburg, Florida is a beautiful coastal city on the west coast of Florida. Known for its sunny weather and Gulf beaches, St. Pete’s nickname is Sunshine City. It is also popular for golfing, boating, fishing and beachgoing. Its waterfront parks host the Dali Museum, featuring surrealist works of art; the Museum of Fine Arts, with works ranging from ancient to contemporary; and Mahaffey Theater, home of the Florida Orchestra. Today we’ll make a visit to a lesser known but fascinating museum with an unexpected western frontier flavor.
