Spectacular red spathes make Anthurium andreanum a popular houseplant. Most winters I have one to bring a bright spot of tropical beauty to my home. Today I’m sharing just a few photos of the pretty red spathes or “flowers”. The spathes can last more than a month.
Monday we looked at the top posts of 2021 in terms of visitors and link party features. At the end of the first year of my little blog, I did a post of my favorite flowers from the year before. I included flowers in the garden or in a bouquet. If you’ve visited me before you probably know flowers are one of my great loves. Several years ago I also included a few nature shots, another great love. Today’s post is some of my favorites photos of flowers and nature from 2021. I hope I included some of yours too.
Several weeks ago I shared my summer red, white, and blue table with a centerpiece of hydrangea and anthuriums. My hydrangea flowers didn’t last long, but true to nature, the anthuriums still look beautiful. As a houseplant, the “flowers” or spathes can last a month or two. It seems in a cut bouquet, they still have a long life. Unbelievably right before Independence Day, my big white amaryllis produced a huge new stalk with 4 buds. As the winds and rain came from the tropical storm Elsa, the stalk with the open flowers bent to the ground. I cut the stalk and made a new arrangement of white amaryllis and anthuriums. Cost $0.00
It’s the beginning of February and I still have lots of blooming houseplants. The poinsettia from Christmas is very happy on the floor in front of the sliding glass doors in the dining room. It still has green leaves turning red and gets plenty of afternoon light.
Anthuriums are herbaceous epiphytes native to tropical America, a genus of more than 800 species found in the New World tropics from Mexico to northern Argentina and Uruguay. The anthurium is also known as Painted Tongue, Flamingo Flower (Flamingo Lily) or Tail Flower.They are grown for their brightly colored flower spathes and their ornamental leaves.
