Forced Amarylis by My Front Door
I live in Central Florida, growing zone 9B which is semi-tropical. Amaryllis is a subtropical bulb that belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family and is native to South Africa. It is grown as a potted plant in most parts of the United States but can also be grown outdoors year round in warm areas like Florida. Amaryllis sold at Christmas are FORCED bulbs.
I must admit I miss my garden at my old house. To be honest, I don’t miss weeding, trying to find a yard guy for mowing, trimming trees, etc. I do miss my flowers. My condo is still in central Florida in zone 9B and 10A but a little further south than where my house was. In January, I found forced amaryllis bulbs on sale that had been originally offered for Christmas. They’re big beautiful bulbs and expensive. With the sale, they were a little more reasonable, and I bought two. Both bulbs had roots and green shoots growing inside the boxes. If you remember my amaryllis garden at my old home, I bought a mixed red and white and a solid white similar to what I had there.

July Amaryllis
Amaryllis is a subtropical bulb that belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family and is native to South Africa. It is grown as a potted plant in most parts of the United States but can also be grown outdoors year round in warm areas like Florida. Amaryllis flower in the late winter through early spring in central Florida.
I’ve shared multiple posts this year on my amazing white amaryllis which has flowered multiple times this summer. Right before Independence Day, my big white amaryllis produced a huge new stalk with 4 buds. I captured these photos before the winds and rain from the tropical storm Elsa bent the stalk with the open flowers to the ground. I cut the flowers for a bouquet I shared with Amaryllis & Anthurium. It is amazing to have spring flowers so late but I am not complaining – I would be thrilled if amaryllis bloomed all summer. It would be like having your tulips bloom in July!
Amaryllis & Anthurium
Amaryllis is a subtropical bulb that belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family and is native to South Africa. It is grown as a potted plant in most parts of the United States but can also be grown outdoors year round in warm areas like Florida. Anthuriums are herbaceous epiphytes native to tropical America, a genus of more than 800 species found in the New World tropics from Mexico to northern Argentina and Uruguay.
Several weeks ago I shared my summer red, white, and blue table with a centerpiece of hydrangea and anthuriums. My hydrangea flowers didn’t last long, but true to nature, the anthuriums still look beautiful. As a houseplant, the “flowers” or spathes can last a month or two. It seems in a cut bouquet, they still have a long life. Unbelievably right before Independence Day, my big white amaryllis produced a huge new stalk with 4 buds. As the winds and rain came from the tropical storm Elsa, the stalk with the open flowers bent to the ground. I cut the stalk and made a new arrangement of white amaryllis and anthuriums. Cost $0.00
Last Amaryllis & A Bunny
Last week I shared what I thought was my last amaryllis. It was my last solid deep red amaryllis. Then I got a surprise from a little amaryllis I got as a forced bulb 3 years ago at Christmas and then planted in the yard. Last year no flower. I thought it was dying. It was a little green plant with a couple of small leaves. Then I noticed 2 small buds forming in almost the middle of May. I’ve explained before that most folks in my neighborhood have flowering amaryllis in February, March, and maybe April. My solid deep red amaryllis bloom late in April. Now this little red amaryllis with a solid white center has 2 flowers. I moved my little bunny over to pose him smelling a flower. (No there isn’t a great fragrance.)
My Amaryllis Blooms

Here in central Florida red amaryllis are blooming in many yards in February and March. My amaryllis tend to be late and usually bloom late March or early April. These photos were taken at the end of March by my front porch.
