Why do we cough?
Coughs generally clear the throat of irritants, including microbes, dust, smoke, and mucus. Most everyone has a cough on occasion as it is a reflex action. Chronic long-term coughs may hint at more significant health problems. But if you develop a new cough and you are not sure why, that can be concerning, especially if it persists for any length of time. In order to take proper care of your overall health, you should seek medical advice for chronic problems. Usually, acute coughs clear up within a few days to a week, but chronic coughs that last typically signal the need for a trip to the doctor.
