How Light Transforms a Home Through the Seasons

Pay attention to your home and you’ll see it looks different through the seasons due to natural lighting. Lighting can transform a home because of the sun’s movement. Adapting both natural and artificial light sources can enhance your comfort and well-being year-round.

Spring Light Brings Everything Back To Life

There’s something kind about spring light; it’s soft, bright, and fresher after months of gray. Suddenly, with spring sunshine coming in, the house feels fresher, the colors look better and brighter. You start noticing things you didn’t see in winter (good and bad). There will be dust, that’s true, but there’s also a lot of potential, and spring light is the kind that makes you happy to move furniture, wash curtains, open windows, and start thinking about all those projects you put to one side.

When it comes to wall decorations for the spring season, incorporating elements from nature is a natural way to bring beautiful elements of spring into your home. Botanical prints, spring flowers, faux plants, fresh fruit, bunnies, birds, and Easter eggs are all decorative signs of the new life happening outside.

Summer Light Changes Everything

Summer light literally pours into rooms when it arrives. Even a space that you weren’t all that keen on in the winter can be a beautiful place to spend time in during the summer. It all feels like there’s a bit more energy around, which can definitely have a positive effect on your mood. However, this is also the season when you really will notice how important shade is, and blinds, curtains, and how you accessorize your room are going to matter a lot more.

To create a summertime interior, focus on a light, airy, and natural feel by swapping heavy fabrics for light textiles like linen and cotton, decluttering spaces, and letting in more natural light. Incorporate natural textures like wicker, rattan, and jute, and bring in plants or coastal elements like seashells to evoke a vacation vibe.

This is also often the time when homeowners notice whether their windows are helping or working against them. It’s the season for projects like new roofs or new window installation. Maintenance or upgrades that protect the home from the summer heat, save energy, and make everything a lot more comfortable.

Autumn Light Feels Warmer

Autumn has its own look, where the world looks golden all day long. That’s because the light actually sits lower, so it spills across the room more, instead of shining in from above like it will during the summer. So by 4pm, your living room really does feel like the cosiest place on the planet, and your interior design ideas will feel different even if you never lifted a finger.

Winter Light Can Change How You Use Your Home

Winter light is what you might call minimal at best, and it’s definitely sharper and perhaps moodier than at any other time of the year. It can actually make rooms feel smaller, and definitely cooler.

One good thing about winter light is its ability to highlight textures really nicely. Winter homes call for some throws, cushions, soft lamps, and warm bulbs or maybe some candles. This will help to make things a little more cozy when the light is fading so much earlier.

Use thoughtful outdoor lighting to create a welcoming exterior and enhance curb appeal during long, dark evenings. String small white lights before Christmas around trees and leave up through January. How about white lanterns hanging from a tree?

As we decorate for Christmas, think of ways to add lights for winter. Add mirrors for light reflection. Use layers of lighting to enhance the depth of the room too. Enjoy the season and have a great week!

  1. Carol, I love your honesty about the dust! We have a string of clear Christmas lights around one of our slide rooms in our Tiny House, and the glow they offer the whole room is quite mood lifting. Visiting from #MMBC

  2. I love the light in the spring time, it means winter is almost over and it always gives my motivation a boost but in the winter I love lighting candles, shutting the curtains and getting cosy. What a great read!

I love to make new friends and get to know you.
