Moving from one residence to another is one of those life events that should be exciting for you. Often it ends up being a massive hassle and a huge source of stress because there’s just so much to organize and so much to do, right? Boxes, tape that sticks to everything but the things you need it to, drawers full of stuff you don’t know whether you actually need or not…it’s a pretty endless and annoying task. But you know what? You can make the best of it, lower your stress levels, and increase the excitement, by simplifying the process. To do that, you need a plan…
Start with a Plan (And Write It Down)
Yes, it sounds obvious. But when you’re in the middle of a house move, even the simplest tasks can feel overwhelming. Start by making a checklist. Include everything from giving notice to your landlord, to changing your address with the post office, to booking the movers. A plan helps you stay on track and avoid those last-minute “Oh no, we forgot the Wi-Fi” moments. Back in 2022, I wrote about planning a move with a free printable Checklist.

Declutter Before You Pack
Moving is the perfect time to go through your stuff and ask, “Do I really need this?” Be honest. If it’s been living in a drawer untouched for years, it probably doesn’t need to come with you.
Go room by room, and separate things into keep, donate, sell, and toss piles. Not only does this lighten your load, it also means less to unpack later, which your future self will absolutely appreciate. When I moved a year and a half ago, I got rid of almost half my possessions. Still when I unpacked at the condo, I kept saying, “Why did I pack you? I’m not going to need you!”
Pack with Purpose
Instead of tossing things into boxes at random, try packing by category or room. Label each box clearly on multiple sides, and consider creating a color-coded system with tape or stickers. It sounds like extra work, but it pays off big time when you’re trying to find your coffee maker the first morning in your new place.

Also, pack a “first night” box. Include things like toilet paper, pajamas, basic toiletries, snacks, sheets, a hammer, and anything else you might need before all your boxes are unpacked. Trust us, no one wants to dig through twenty boxes looking for toothpaste or clothes for the next day.
Get Help Where It Matters
You don’t have to do it all on your own. From professional movers to junk removal services, hiring a little help can take a lot of stress off your plate.

One area people often overlook? Cleaning. Once your stuff is out, cleaning the old place can feel like the last thing you want to deal with. That’s where Sparkly Maid move out cleaning services can be a game changer. They’ll take care of the deep clean, so you can focus on settling into your new space, not scrubbing the oven you’re leaving behind. If you’re like me, I hate to clean ovens.
Give Yourself Some Grace
Even with the best planning, moving rarely goes exactly how you imagined. That’s okay. Keep things in perspective, take breaks when you need to, and celebrate the small wins. You’re starting a new chapter, after all.

Make your move simpler by planning smart, decluttering early, and asking for help when you need it. With a few thoughtful steps, you’ll be out of the old place and into your new home with a lot less hassle. Some really awesome tips! Declutter…something I really need to do, moving or not.
I find it never ends. You finish and then need to do it again.
…I never want to move again!
These are good suggestions. We have not moved in over 35 years, but I am starting to give some thought to decluttering and getting rid of things that I just don’t need . A friend said it took her almost 3 years to prepare for a move from her large home to an apartment. She had accumulated so much stuff that it took a long time to go through it all.
In just 13 years in my house I accumulated so much “stuff”. As I wrote on the blog, I got rid of half of it before the move, and still moved too much! Decluttering and organizing never ends.
I hate moving. I’m not good at decluttering. I do think you’re right about making lists and having a first night box. The last time I moved, I packed a suitcase for the first night, but forgot my pajamas.
That must have been hard when you discovered no pajamas. Glad you’re happily settled.
