Gardenia is a genus of flowering plants in the coffee family, Rubiaceae, native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, Madagascar, Pacific Islands, and Australia. The genus was named by Carl Linnaeus and John Ellis after Alexander Garden (1730–1791), a Scottish naturalist. Gardenia species typically grow as shrubs or small trees from 2 to 15 feet, however some species are more like ground cover. Gardenias thrive in bright, indirect sunlight In warm climates like Southern California or Florida. They need protection from hot afternoon sun to prevent leaf scorch. They cannot survive deep freezes.
The weather here in central Florida has been beautiful, warm days with highs in the upper 80’s or low 90’s F. We’ve had no significant rain in the last week. Summer temperatures are here but the humidity hasn’t risen like summer.

Down in my condo building’s garden surrounded by the building is a mature gardenia bush. It has been blooming for almost two weeks.

It is so beautiful, and the fragrance is heavenly. All gardenia blossoms possess a wax-like appearance and can be either single or double, depending on the cultivar.

I’ve really enjoyed spring here at the condo and I’ve done little work other than plant the amaryllis bulbs and water them. Everytiime I go out I look down on the garden and think I must walk by the gardenias.

Underneath the garden bush are small garden statues and a potted plant.

I really love that there is a garden that I don’t have to tend. Most buildings in this complex do not wrap around a space but face one direction in a line. I originally looked at several other buildings, but I choose the one with decorations and a garden. The garden has made the transition from house to apartment easier. I appreciate your visit and wish you sunny days.

Awesome that you feel home at your new condo…Nice warm weather there…here we just have rain and early morning when I went out for a walk, a jacket, sometimes a coat, was still needed.
Have you had spring bulbs coming up? That’s my favorite part of spring up north.
Oh, I love the Gardenia. What a lovely, lovely bloom. It’s such a pleasure. Thank you for sharing.
Greetings by Heidrun
…gardenias can be intoxicating!
Yes they are one of my favorite flowers
it’s always nice when flowers are blooming. Springtime is is so good
I love your garden with the gardinia bush. I also love the garden ornaments. I guess that is how people make a communal garden their own.
I like your garden statues! Good weather here as well. I like this time of year.

It truly must be nice to walk and see gardenia’s growing right where you live. Breathe in the sweet smell. I enjoyed your post. Happy Trails!
I have a large Gardena bush in my yard and it is in full bloom.
Isn’t it wonderful? We’re lucky here in Florida to be able to grow it. Have a great day!
I’m so glad you are enjoying your condo spring. A garden you don’t have to tend sounds pretty wonderful to me!
oh me too – I just couldn’t take care of the garden at the house and who can afford a gardener?
It sounds like you are having some lovely weather. Those bushes are beautiful and the flowers are so pretty!
thanks Kim – have a great weekend!
I love gardenia. I grew up with them. However, I cannot seem to grow them here in NorCal. I killed three already.
Worth a Thousand Words
I love the beautiful fragrance of gardenia and the beautiful flower. It is one of my favorites, but I’ve never had much luck growing them even in the house.
It’s my impression that gardenias don’t like to be in pots but I could be wrong. They do best with early morning sun and afternoon shade. I killed my first one at the house because I put it in the wrong place – too much sun. I tried various bushes at the house that died. Sometimes the soil, sun, etc. doesn’t work for specific plants.
I can imagine their delightful scent! Gardenias were my mother’s favorite flower and every time I see our smell them I think of her.
That is a wonderful memory to cherish!
