Golden Trumpet Trees Spring Blooms

Tropical Tabebuia trees

Common name(s): Golden trumpet tree

Family: Bignoniaceae

USDA hardiness zones: 9B through 11

Origin: native to Central and South America

This last week I was surprised by the sudden blooms of bright yellow on trees in the neighborhood. I remembered them from last year. It reminds me of forsythia up north. One morning you wake up to an explosion of yellow blossoms throughout the neighborhood.. Tabebuias are from the West Indies, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, and Central America, but several species are very well adapted to South Florida. I am thrilled to find the golden beauties around me. Since they are tropical plants, they WON’T SURVIVE HARD FREEZES.

The tropical Tabebuia trees or yellow trumpet trees are an eye-catching spring bloomer. They have opening clusters of large bright yellow flowers during February and March. Golden trumpet tree has four-inch-long silvery leaves with tan, fuzzy undersides. The trumpet-shaped, bright yellow blossoms appear in dense 2.5 to 8 inch long terminal clusters. I meant to take photos at the beginning of the week, but life interfered. Below is a tree almost finished with blooming at the condo building next door. I think the building and other trees prevent it from getting enough sunlight. They seem to do better alone with full sun like the one above.

Around here in Lakeland, the blossoms are suddenly here and a week later, they are gone. I love the bright color against the blue sky; it makes me very happy.

Wishing you all blue skies and bright blooms.

  3. The yellow colour is stunning against the blue sky. I love how the tree is leaning to one side I imagine it has grown in the direction of the sun at it’s strongest point, it’s almost like it’s reaching towards growth. Thanks for sharing this beautiful example of nature.

I love to make new friends and get to know you.
