A common spice for many fall recipes is the mix known as pumpkin spice or pumpkin pie spice. It’s a basic recipe that is great for beginners and advanced home cooks alike. Making your own spice mix really is less expensive than buying it at the store. Before you start, make sure to check the freshness of your ground spices. Look for the expiration dates, take off the bottle cap, and smell your spice. You should do this at least annually to gurantee great flavor when cooking. Spices lose their potency over time, and if they’re not adding flavor to your food, you’ll be disappointed. I recommend using spices for a mix that have a 2 year expiration date. This will make a spice mix that you can safely use for 1 to 2 years.
This spice blend is wonderful on anything you might typically top with cinnamon, like your coffee or oatmeal. Stir a pinch into yogurt or mix with a bit of sugar and turn basic cinnamon toast into something a little more fall-flavorful. Besides fall recipes, just thinking of appetizers and dishes that can be garnished with a dash of pumpkin spice extends its use and its amazing flavor. I know someone who loves to serve warmed Trader Joe’s Garlic and Asiago Cheese Dip sprinkled with the spice. It is so amazingly tasty! We also put it on top of homemade ranch dip once too. It was a perfect compliment.

Thank you so much for sharing this recipe. My daughter loves pumpkin spice but I’d never thought of making my own. It will make a great stocking filler for her 🙂

The nice part of making your own blend is you can adjust the spice ratios to fit your own taste. I hope your daughter enjoys it.
My mom used to make pumpkin pie spice, so one year I decided to make some and gift it in little jars at Christmastime to friends and neighbors. Thank you for sharing this post with us at the Will Blog for Comments #50 linkup. Have a great week! We hope to see you at #51 with more posts to share (old or new), which opens next Monday morning.
