After the holidays when all the decorations come down, life seems kind of drab. In many locations of the country cold weather also brings darker skies. Here in central Florida, we’ve had several cold fronts with rain come down from the north. Cold for us. Even though I live in Florida and winters are mild, I always want a little pop of color in my home.
A small houseplant is the answer. Back several years ago I wrote about keeping winter houseplants healthy. One of my favorite little bloomers in winter is the cyclamen. It blooms for about 8 weeks during the dead of winter. Last week I found a little display of flowering cyclamens in the floral department of my favorite Publix. I had to take one home.
Cyclamen comes in a variety of pinks, whites, reds, and maroon flowers with heart-shaped leaves. This particular plant has a mix of light pink and dark pink. With this plant, more leaves means more buds and flowers. Cyclamen are actually a type of bulb or corm (a short, thickened vertical stem). Their native habitat is the Mediterranean and Southern Europe. In your home, Cyclamen like to be a little on the cooler side with temperatures around 61˚F and in direct light or bright indirect light. Those are pretty, Carol. I’ve never had much luck with them here but I love their bright blooms.
You only have to keep them alive for 4 to 8 weeks. I think of them like cut flowers but with a longer life.

Cyclamen look pretty, but I have no talent for them. As my birthday is in November when flowers are scarce here, I often got cyclamen as gifts, but they liked it MUCH cooler than I could provide and never lived long.

It’s nice to see flowers when the weather is so rubbish outside. I’ve been buying a bunch each week, having them come with the food delivery.

buying a bouquet each week sounds like heaven – I did that more when I was still working – I’ll keep the cyclamen until it dies back in a month or so and look for another short term potted plant
I never knew the name of this plant but my grandmother used to have a purple one and I’m pretty sure I still have the painting I made capturing it in bloom one year. What a great way to brighten up your home in the winter.

We’ve got some cyclamen outside. It seems to be doing well despite the wintery weather we’ve been having these past 2 weeks.

I haven’t bought a cyclamen in many years. I like their variegated leaves but I don’t have the right indoor conditions for them.. Each January I usually buy a primrose plant but I never did this year. Like you, I think these short term potted plants as a longer lived alternative to cut flowers. Alana ramblinwitham
Oh I love that.. what a great little pop of color.
One of my favorites! They grow wild here and are a protected flower. I tried raising the cultured ones at home without success, not cold enough for them.
