How Your Skin Care Should Change

Having healthy and glowing skin is everyone’s dream. But not everyone has good skin. In fact, many of us struggle with dry, oily, acne-prone, sensitive, or aging skin. This might be because of our genes or the kind of environment we live in. Diet, lifestyle habits, and stress level also impact your skin. Whether you’re 20 or 50, it’s essential to take care of your skin to look its best no matter your age. All too often, we adopt a skin care routine in our 20s that we enjoy and seems to work well, and then forget about it for decades. But our skin changes over time, and what kept your skin healthy and fresh in the past may not be the best thing for your skin now.

Why Is Skin Health So Important?

The health of your skin is closely linked to your general health and well-being. There’s no doubt that if your skin is healthy, you will feel more confident in yourself. And looking after your skin will protect you from harmful UV rays, bacteria, and other microbes. Poor skin care can lead to unnecessary infections and even permanent scarring. Plus, it can cause your skin to age faster than usual. Good skin care will also delay the onset of wrinkles, discoloration, and sagging. And it’ll help to maintain your skin’s natural hydration and elasticity. Now let’s discuss skin care through the years.

I. Young Skin: Infancy And Hormonal Teenage Skin

Newborns don’t have many wrinkles, but they do have lots of soft, smooth skin. They’re born with about 2 million skin cells per day. And for the first several weeks of life, their skin cells are constantly being shed (shedding). During this time, new skin cells are replacing the old ones quickly. This is because babies are very sensitive to chemicals, and their skin is very delicate. If your baby is experiencing troubled skin, read this article, Baby Acne: Causes, Prevention, And The Best Treatment Methods, for some excellent tips and information.

Hormonal teenage skin is a completely different story. This is the age when the body goes through lots of changes. Hormonal changes cause skin to become acne-prone. As your teens’ body matures and starts getting more hormones, they may also get dark patches of skin on their face and body. These patches are caused by an overproduction of melanin, a pigment produced by the skin.

II. 20’s: Healthy Skin Tips

Looking after your skin is part of self-care 101. And your skin during your 20s is still young and fresh, but as you grow older, it will also start showing signs of aging. So it’s important to take care of your skin during this decade. If you want to amp up your exfoliating routine, then your 20s are the perfect time to look into getting chemical peels. Here are some simple tips for healthy skin during your 20s.

Protect Your Skin From UV Rays

It’s extremely important to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays to prevent early aging and skin cancer. Stay indoors during the peak hours of sunlight, apply sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 on exposed areas, wear a cap and always use shading while driving to reduce skin damage.

Eat A Healthy Diet

A healthy diet is essential for healthy skin. Eating a diet high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds is the best way to get enough vitamin A, E, and C, which are great for your skin.

Drink Plenty Of Water

Drinking an adequate amount of water daily is essential for your health. It helps flush toxins and impurities from your body, including your skin. Water also keeps your skin hydrated and glowing.

Reduce Stress

Stress can have a significant impact on your skin. Research suggests stress can cause or aggravate breakouts, blackheads, and wrinkles. And may also make existing skin conditions worse.

Get Enough Sleep

Sleep is crucial for your body to repair itself. If you are not getting enough sleep, your skin will be the first to show signs of it. Make sure you get a good 7-9 hours of sleep every night.

Use Anti-Aging Eye Treatments

It might seem a bit premature to start combating wrinkles in your 20s. But the earlier you start, the better your results will be.

III. 30’s: Maintaining Good Skin

During your 30s, you will experience visible changes in your skin as it ages. This is the decade when wrinkles and fine lines appear, and your skin loses collagen. So your 30s are the perfect time to start introducing a neck cream to combat sagging and lost collagen. Here are some tips for maintaining good skin through your 30s.

Avoid Smoking And Drinking

Both smoking and drinking increase the breakdown of collagen in your skin and accelerate aging, leading to wrinkles and fine lines.

Get A Healthy Routine

Maintain a healthy skincare routine to keep your skin looking good. This includes cleaning your skin twice a day and using a moisturizer once you are done cleaning.

Prevent Pigmentation

Your skin will get discolored in certain areas as you age. This is a normal process, but you can prevent it by using sunscreen and avoiding too much exposure to the sun.

Use Vitamin C Creams

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that combats dark spots. Using a cream will help with these. But make sure you’re getting enough of this vitamin in your diet too.

IV. 40’s: Signs Of Aging

As you enter your 40s, your skin structure changes. The top layer becomes thinner, and fewer new cells are formed. This means that wrinkles and fine lines might start to deepen. As well as age spots and a rougher texture. And your skin continues to lose collagen and elastin, which can result in saggy skin. You may also notice a change in your skin tone, and dark patches may appear on your face and body. But it’s not all bad. Just follow these tips to slow down aging during your 40s.

Use Age-Specific Creams

There are plenty of options out there when looking for skin care. As you get older, it’s worth using age-targeted products. For example, there’s Retinol to help with wrinkles. But be warned, it is pretty harsh, so sensitive skin won’t like it. Instead, you could try the natural alternative, Bakuchiol.

Try Niacinamide

This serum is a form of B3. It goes a long way to help with wrinkles and problem pigmentation of older skin. Plus, it helps protect against pollution and UV rays. This is excellent as your skin loses some natural protection against the sun as you age.

V. 50’s And Above: Healthy Aging Tips

As you enter your 50s and above, you’ll notice plenty of other changes. As collagen loss continues, you might see more sagging. If you spend a lot of time outside, sun spots and dark patches might become darker. It goes without saying that you should continue using SPF throughout your life. The same goes for eating healthy, exercising more, and reducing stress. Follow these tips to slow down the signs of aging during this decade.

Use Body Oil

Skin tends to dry out the older we get. Intense hydrating products like body oil are perfect for introducing in your 50s. They help ensure your skin receives enough moisture and encourage good circulation.

Be Careful With Your Skin

As you age, your skin becomes thinner, drier, and less elastic. This is why it’s essential to be careful with your skin. Particularly if you have a condition like acne or psoriasis.

Conclusion

As you get older, your skin will start to change. And it’ll need more care than it did in your younger years. This is why it’s important to be aware of the changes in your skin now so that you can take care of it better. With the tips and info given in this article, you’re now better equipped than ever to take good care of your skin. Your skin will thank you for it!

  1. I am in a good skincare routine at the moment. I feel I need to take more care of my skin the older I am getting. I am over 40 and have noticed more lines appearing, great advice.
