This post was originally shared on July 27, 2017. It’s one of my favorite posts, and I’m resharing it.
I’ve been going through old photos and pulled a couple from Cumberland Falls. It is the largest fall south of Niagara and is often called, Niagara of the South. Kentucky has nice state parks often with lovely lodges. The historic Dupont Lodge is perched high above the Cumberland River, a lovely lodge from “way back when.” You can also rent cabins, cottages, and camp sites. As with most places, the price is most reasonable off-season.
The state of Kentucky describes Cumberland Falls as “a wall of water falling 60 feet into a boulder-strewn gorge, a whispering mist that kisses the face and a magical moonbow visible on a clear night under a full moon – a cool attraction you’ll never forget!” It is pretty special. It has 125 foot wide cascade over the boulders to the gorge. They offer a “rainbow mist” ride by boat to the falls during the summer. I think that it’s also a great place to visit in the autumn with the foliage. Activities available in the park include mountain biking, hiking, fishing, horseback rides, and white water rafting.
The park includes 1,657 acres (671 ha) and is also the home of 44-foot (13 m) Eagle Falls.. The falls are one of the few places in the western hemisphere where a moonbow can frequently be seen on nights with a full moon. Before you ask, no I didn’t see one. You must be there at night with a full moon and a clear sky. There is a place on the trail for best viewing of moonbows as well as 20 miles of various trails.
Thanks for taking a trip with me.

What a gorgeous place!!
Yes it is.
I can’t believe I didn’t know about this falls. They are so pretty and powerful. Thanks for teaching me something new today. #TPThursday
It’s not as publicized as say Niagra Falls. I have family who live close by and they are always going over there for the day.
What a wonderful and lovely place. I know I would love it.
I’ve been here several times as a kid and an adult. It’s a pretty awesome place! Thanks for sharing on the Awesome Life Friday link up.
Just gorgeous! I would love to see that. I am so glad you shared these photos.
Thanks for your sweet comment.
Our kiddos camped there back in the fall! Such a beautiful place. Thanks for sharing and linking up! Hope you have a great weekend! 💜
Wow! That looks so beautiful!
Your photo of the waterfall is lovely. The boat of people below the falls gives a nice perspective of size.
Looks beautiful! thanks for sharing!
Hi Carol! Thanks for linking up at #overthemoon. This resort looks so much fun and a great getaway. I love the sound of falls. Have a great day!
That is a beautiful spot, visited as a child. Thanks for sharing at Home Sweet Home!
I have been in a lot of places in Kentucky, but I have missed this gem! Thanks so much for sharing at Celebrate Your Story!
The Cumberland Falls are wonderful. I’ve not heard of them or seen them before. I also love the photo of the stream running over the rocks. Thanks for linking with Travel Photo Thursday.
I’d not heard of them before either – but they did remind me of Niagara a tiny bit so easy to see why they have that name. Thanks for sharing with #PoCoLo
This State Resort parks seems so picturesque, Carol! I would love to go hiking there. Is summer the best season to do so?
Summer is beautiful in the park and most popular, but you can hike in any season. I would suggest spring summer or fall the first time. If you’re familiar with http://www.alltrails.com here are comments on trails there. https://www.alltrails.com/parks/us/kentucky/cumberland-falls-state-park
I’ve to Niagara many times and it is amazing. You should go there at least once. I have to tell you that firstname.lastname@example.org is gone. Someone stole my name. Whomever he is changed my password last Saturday and every thing is gone.
Oh Paul I’m so sorry. Are you talking about your email or your blog? Whichever it is contact the host – like Yahoo or Blogspot. They can get rid of the old account and you can make a new one. There is a blogger who I visit and she says right on her main page that this is her blog and that the old one with similar name was stolen. I’ve had my email stolen before and it’s just so horrible. You have to make a new account and try to remember your contacts to let them know.
Cumberland Fall State Park is a wonderful place to visit. The falls is very pretty. I live in Kentucky and have visit the park.
You are so lucky! My family in Michigan drives down periodically for a getaway.
That looks like such a gorgeous spot to visit!!
it is a wonderful place to visit and so much to do
This looks like such fun. What absolutely wonderful memories — and such a beautiful spot, too!
Wow, gorgeous skies! I’ve never heard of a moonbow. That would be fun to see.
I’d love to see one too.
Beautiful place and your photos are so wonderful. I would love to walk there.
What a beautiful place to spend some time!
That looks like a great place to go get outside, get some exercise, and then relax some, and taking great photos the whole time.
how nice that you shared this post again. The state of Kentucky describes Cumberland Falls in a very poetic way – but I can understand it based on your photos. The waterfall is particularly impressive when you see the small boat next to it. The area around the water also looks beautiful.
All the best and have a nice weekend,
I would definitely love to visit this park if we are ever in the area. The falls look amazing!
It is a fun and beautiful place
Cumberland Falls …. looks like a really fun place to visit. Nature at its best.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful area Carol. It looks incredible!
thanks Denise – Happy Weekend!
Bello lugar te mando un beso.
We took a trip here years ago. To me it was a smaller area to hike, but very lovely all the same. We actually arrived on a day when a moonbow was likely that night, but had to leave before dark.
I do enjoy the falls and woods in the park. Thanks for coming by!
I love the soothing sound of a waterfall. – Margy
