5 Tips to Improve Your Home’s Curb Appeal

Many of us love our homes and enjoy doing small projects that make it special. This is certainly true of your home’s exterior. Whether you are looking to sell your home, or you just want to give your home a fresh look, view your house from the street. At first glance, is the yard welcoming? A well-maintained garden can add beauty and value to your home, while a neglected one can make it look run down and unkempt. Let’s consider basic easy steps to make your home’s exterior pleasant and appealing without breaking the bank.

1) Keep your lawn trimmed and free of weeds.

A neatly trimmed lawn is one of the first things people notice when they pull up to a home, so it’s essential to keep yours trimmed. Use a weed whacker or lawn mower to trim the edges of your lawn and pull any weeds that may have sprouted up. You should also fertilize your lawn regularly to ensure it stays green and healthy. If you don’t have the time or energy to maintain your lawn, consider hiring a professional Lawn Mowing Service. They’ll be able to take care of everything for you, so you can sit back and enjoy your beautiful garden.

2) Plant some flowers.

Flowers add color and life to any garden, and many of them are relatively easy to care for. If you’re not sure what kind of flowers to plant, ask your local nursery or gardening store for some recommendations. I like low maintenance flowers. Spring bulbs are a perfect example. Plant and they multiply and return annually. Just be sure to choose plants appropriate to your growing zone and sun exposure. HGTV has a great post, 24 Can’t Kill Flowers For Beginners. There is something for everyone in their collection. Once you’ve chosen your plants, be sure to water them regularly. If you want to add flowers but not maintain flower beds, add planters and pots of flowers around the porch. It’s easy to switch out the flowers without so much weeding.

3) Maintain or add shrubs or trees.

Shrubs and trees can provide privacy, shade, and shelter for your home. They also provide a green framework for your home’s exterior. When choosing plants for your garden, be sure to select species that are appropriate for the climate in which you live. Once you’ve chosen your plants, be sure to water them regularly. You need to prune them periodically to encourage new growth and maintain their shape. I’ve bought two houses in my life and both had overgrown mature shrubs. Trim your shrubs and do not let them cover your windows. It makes the house look more inviting from the outside while allowing maximum light in your interior. Your shrubs and trees also help you by reducing your energy costs and providing a home for wildlife.

4) Install some outdoor lighting.

Outdoor lighting can add beauty and safety to your home. Path lights or solar lights are a great way to light up walkways, and spotlights can highlight special features in your garden. Be sure to place your lights in areas where they won’t interfere with your neighbor’s property. Outdoor lighting can enhance your home’s exterior from average to magical. 5) Paint or replace your front door.

A fresh coat of paint on your front door can give your home a whole new look. If you make the  front door stand out instead of blend in, it will catch a visitor’s eye. Painting the front door’s costs the amount for a gallon of paint if you do it yourself. It’s relatively an easy DIY. If you want a whole new updated look and it’s in your budget, change your front door to a more modern design

These are five simple tips that will help improve your home’s curb appeal. Choose a project today and in easy steps your home goes from drab to fab.

  1. I really would like to paint or repaint my front door — trying to decide if I should stay with white or go with a color I like. It’s things like that that stop me from getting anything done!

    1. I have the same problem – do I stay with white or go for a color? End result still the same door!
