January Hibiscus

Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, known colloquially as Chinese hibiscus, China rose, Hawaiian hibiscus, rose mallow and shoeblackplant, is a species of tropical hibiscus, a flowering plant in the Hibisceae group of the family Malvaceae.  The biggest difference between tropical and hardy hibiscus is that tropical hibiscus is not hardy in zones lower than zone 9. Tropical hibiscus does not tolerate freezing temperatures and cannot survive more than brief periods of cold.

The other morning I went outside shortly after sunrise.  My two yellow tropical hibiscus had multiple flowers.  Hibiscus are made to flower, and mine always try when they have sun and water.  We have a mild winter with only occasional freezes. It’s been over 5 years since I lost tropical plants to frost.

Winter is a dry season here in Central Florida.  The grass isn’t really growing and flowers are few. I water my potted hibiscus daily and still get flowers.

The average January temperature in the Tampa Bay area is a high of 71 degrees F and a low of 53 degrees F.  When a cold front up north brings a snow storm, we might get cool rain.  The lows can drop into the 40’s.  The counties just north of us can get freezing temperatures.  When I lived in south Florida around Miami and then Ft. Lauderdale, the weather was tropical and hotter.

I hope you enjoyed a look at central Florida’s tropical flowers.  This is why every winter our population is multipled rapidly with the “Snow Birds” arrival.  Many seniors come down for coldest months of the year. Many even own second residences here in Florida.  By Easter, snowbirds ususally have gone back home in the north to see spring.

Sending you warm thoughts.

  1. Your yellow hibiscus is gorgeous, so bright and cheerful! Lovely to see! We are expecting our second snowstorm of the year this afternoon. I wonder if you will be getting rain? Whatever the weather I hope you have a great day 🙂

    1. We’re supposed to get rain today with high in the 60’s. Tomorrow is colder and partly cloudy. Tuesday will the coldest day this week with a low of 39 and a high of 60. We need the rain as my garden is really dry. I’ll wear a sweatshirt when it gets cold and wait for late week to get warm sunny days. Have a beautiful week!

    1. You’re kind in saying that. It’s not me; it’s how easy it is to grow tropical hibiscus. Hope you have a great Sunday!

  2. It’s cold in my hometown this morning and no, one has Flowers at this time, so it was nice seeing this beautiful yellow Flower which has made me want to get out and work in my Garden as soon as possible.

  3. What beautiful photos! I just LOVE hibiscus plants and take photos of them whenever we’re near them.

  4. Beautiful! My son has a similar yellow hibiscus plant like yours, Carol, in a large flower pot that he keeps by his front door. He takes it inside in fall and brings it out again in spring after danger of frost is over. It is a beautiful plant! The flowers are enormous when they bloom. All the Midwest snowbirds go down to Arizona –another popular warm state.

  5. Yellow hibiscus is the Hawaii state flower! The red hibiscus is Jamaica. These are beautiful. Sending you my Aloha from Oahu!! How interesting that you are comfort spring and I am comfort spiral. I really must follow you. Best wishes

I love to make new friends and get to know you.
