How To Get In The Christmas Spirit

The Christmas season is here. The last 6 months have been very stressful for me with several bouts of illness, and I must admit, I’m not as enthused about the holidays as normal.  So today I am doing positive affirmations and remembering the reason for the season. Let’s look at positive steps to get the Christmas spirit.

Remember Why We Celebrate

To me the Christmas spirit includes many things. First we must remember that we are celebrating the birth of Jesus. If you are a Christian, you understand the significance of his birth and his role in our lives.   Sometimes we can forget and get caught up in presents, lights, and parties. If you’ve read any of my Advent posts, you know that the 4 weeks preceeding Christmas are a time to remember and reflect on the great gift we received in Jesus. Family activities could include reading the Christmas story in the Bible.  For Advent, I previously suggested simple readings from scirpture:

  • Week 1 – Isaiah 60:2-3
  • Week 2 – Isaiah 9:2, 6-7
  • Week 3 – Philippians 4:4-7
  • Week 4 – Matthew 1:18-23
  • Christmas Day –  Luke 2:4-14

Second we are celebrating with the people we love and hopefully share with those around us in our community.  Perhaps your family likes to bake Christmas cookies.  Have a baking day and then give cookies to neighbors and friends.  If your church or local organization has a giving tree, involve the family in participating by taking tags and buying the requested presents.  I know most people like buying toys for children and that is a wonderful thing to do.  Personally I ususally looked for the tags no one wanted. One Christmas I was buying an elderly gentleman underwear.  It’s sad that he had to ask for them as a Christmas gift.  You can help your family to get the Christmas spirit by following or establishing your family traditions that add fun and excitement to the season. My posts Advent Acts of Kindness and Family Advent Activities will help you plan meaningful as well as fun activities.

Get a Christmas Tree

Sounds obvious, right?  That doesn’t change the significance of a Christmas tree setting the mood in a home. My third step in getting in the spirit is adding decorations to our homes and buy or make presents for friends and family.  Getting a Christmas tree changes the atmosphere in your home. However, it does not have to be a big tall tree to be effective. You could get a small one that works well with your budget, and it still changes the ambiance.

Add Color

Color is widely known to affect someone’s mood. For instance, warm colors ignite happiness, motivation, stimulation, and aggression. On the other hand, cool colors bring out calmness, tiredness, sadness, and relaxation. Therefore adding color into your home would be a great way to reset your family’s mood to the festive spirit. Additionally, the red color has been used for centuries during Christmas to set the Christmas mood. It is used mainly in association with white to bring in happiness, warmness, motivation, and excitement, which is the entire essence of the festive season.

Change Decor

You can change your décor to match your Christmas spirit.  This usually means getting out boxes of decorations which could include Christmas ornaments, figurines, tablecloths, dishes, mugs, throws, and pillows. Another easy change is your window covers.  I know some ladies up north who put heavier drapes on windows for the winter.  Besides your blinds and curtains, you can get new seat covers for dining chairs, add flowers, lighting, and other types of decorations. If you’re wanting to change your window covers, be sure you know how to choose blinds and shades.  Any of these decor changes can make a drastic change to your environment.

Add Lighting

Christmas is never complete without the flickering light. Employ the use of recessed lights, LED lamps, and chandeliers to add lighting to your home. Additionally, you can add mini string lights, large bulb lights, icicle lights around your Christmas tree. A Christmas tree is just a fir tree if it doesn’t have the festive lights. Lastly, you can also add scented candles to spice it up further.

Shop For Lots Of Festive Food

Christmas and New Year season means lots of festive food. You could order food or cook the food yourself at home. Don’t forget to add a cake, pie, or cupcakes. They are everyone’s favorite. I also like to make my home to smell like the holidays with a natural stovepot simmer of natural ingredients.  See   How to Make a Stovepot Holiday Potpourri  to help you make your home cozy and smell like Christmas with scents  of oranges, cranberries, cinnamon, and rosemary.

Conclusion

Once you have set the mood for the Christmas season, you could watch some Christmas movies together, pop some popcorn, and play games as a family. Moreover, you could invite your friends over to celebrate together and fill the air with joy. Last but not least, keep in mind that Christmas is about spreading joy and happiness.

  1. I love Christmas and everything you said is true. This year has been tough for us but as Christmas came closer I felt better, with the Advent, Jesus, tree, the music, the decorations and of cause the food. It’s getting harder with all of these Covid things but we still have to smile and say ” Merry Christmas ” to all and to all a good night.

    1. You are so right Paul. We should also be glad that we are here to celebrate the day. So many are not here now. God Bless and have a wonderful Christmas!

  2. All things I do. But the real spirit comes from within, deep and full. You need a little energy to be able to pull it off in full force! So, I would add, get some rest and remember the concept Peace on Earth and try to bring it into one’s own life! It’s not always as easy as it seems!

I love to make new friends and get to know you.
