One of my favorite treats when I was growing up was classic Rice Krispies treats developed by Kellogg. (Recipe for classic treat at Kellogg) I’m sure you have all made them at some point. Rice Krispies cereal, butter, and marshmallows are the 3 basic ingredients. I like the small marshmallows as they melt faster. You can use stick margarine but tub margarine is not recommended. It was a favorite recipe for me as a young cook all the way through my early 20’s. I rarely eat them now as I limit my sweets, but an occasional treat can be good.
Through the years inventive moms have used food dyes or icing, added chocolate or nuts or M & M’s, or molded the treats into desired shapes for holidays.
Pumpkin Treat Using Color, Chocolate Candy Stem & Green Icing
Today let’s look at variations of this easy treat for our holiday season.
I. Melted Chocolate
I believe chocolate can raise this simple childhood treat to another level. It is appropriate for any holiday or season. Just be sure to have non-chocolate treats for those who can’t eat chocolate. Also use a good chocolate. Read the ingredients. I like using Enjoy Life semisweet dark chocolate chips which are close to 70% cacao. Check the amount of chocolate in your chips as some are as low as 29%. I like that the chips are Soy free, Nut free, Gluten free, Dairy free, Non GMO, Vegan, and Paleo. When eaten in moderation, semisweet chocolate can keep your brain sharp, your blood flowing and your heart healthy. They melt easily in a microwave oven. You can dip your treats or drizzle a design.
II. Holiday Rice Krispies
Since Kellog‘s introduced the limited time holiday mix of Rice Krispies with the addition of red and green krispies, a Christmas version of the treat is extremely easy. Use the classic recipe with the holiday krispies and you’re good to go. You can cut in squares or roll into balls. Always be sure to oil your tool and hands to prevent sticking.

III. Balls of Red and Green
Two Sisters rolled their Christmas Rice Krispie Treat Bites in to small balls in red, green, and white using standard krispies and food color.

IV. Hand Mold Treats
If you feel artistic, you can try to mold by hand in shapes, but I feel there are easier methods.
V. Christmas Tree 1
For a Christmas tree, press warm krispies into a square pan, and cut into triangles. You can use regular rice krispies and add food dye if you want. Personally I don’t like adding dye to my food. Below is Rachel Cooks Christmas tree treats.

VI. Christmas Tree 2
The Spruce Eats shows you what you can do with plain rice krispies, icing, M & M‘s, and candy canes.

VII. Christmas Tree 3
Over at Midwest Mash, plain krispies treats were cut into tree shapes and colored sugar sprinkles of red and green were used for her Holiday Rice Krispy Treats.

VIII. Christmas Tree 4
For Cookies & Cups Krispy Treats Christmas Tree green food coloring was added to the classic recipe. The traditional square treats are cut and stacked as a pyramid on a plate or platter. Then it was decorated with M & M’s or other candies for a special Christmas tree. Candies surround the tree on the plate making a fun holiday presentation.

IX. Reindeer 1
One of my favorite holiday shapes is a reindeer. Let’s start with Momma Lew‘s Easy Christmas Rice Krispies Treats. She used the traditional rectangular treat with just 2 pretzels, candy eyes, and a red M & M. They are cute and are not hard to make.

X. Reindeer 2
Next is Thirty Handmade Days‘ Reindeer Rice Krispies Treats. It’s similar to the one above except no pretzels for antlers. She piped melted chocolate for antlers.

Now let’s look at interesting ideas for using rice krispies as a building block for say a cake or house. Know anyone who can’t eat wheat or gluten? This is a fast and easy way to make a dessert that most people can eat. Below is My Food & Family‘s rice krispies cake. You decorate with icing and sprinkles. It easily could look like Christmas using white iciing and red sprinkles and maybe a star in the middle..

Oh my goodness Carol. I knew the ones that my wife would make for Christmas but I didn’t realize the many different types. Last year I tried to take her Rice Krispy treats and put the chocolate on it but people didn’t like it, the chocolate I meant.
Cruisin Paul

Oh my, these are so festive. Can you believe I have NEVER made rice crispy treats? I have raised a daughter and loved on 2 grands and I have never. I’m ashamed to say that. 🙂 But these all look like fun to make and to eat. Thanks for sharing at #aclwcc.
don’t worry about never making them – I’m sure you baked real cakes with your mom.

Would you believe I accidentally bought rice crispies cereal instead of the rice squares (I wanted to make puppy chow). Glad I found this post as I have never made rice crispy treats before. Will be making the snowballs!
