How to Extend Your Backyard Use Into The Fall

During the Covid-19 pandemic and the various lockdowns, our homes have taken on a whole new meaning. We have turned our storage rooms into home offices, living rooms into yoga studios, and bedrooms into home theaters. In all this, there is an area of the house that has stood out for importance and convenience: the garden.

As temperatures drop in the fall, our outdoor activities start to dwindle.  There are still beautiful days and evenings to draw us outside before the winter hits.  Let’s look at easy tips to extend our garden time into the fall.

Invest in the Right Outdoor Furniture

If you are trying to create a garden for socializing, outdoor furniture is a key element. However, the type of furniture you decide to opt for will change the feel and design of your entire garden. Undoubtedly, you can use pallets to create your own furniture and, if you are an expert DIYer, this could be a fun and affordable way to transform your garden.  Country Living has a great article,   22 Creative DIY Bench Ideas, to help you create your perfect garden seat.  But if you decide to shop for outdoor furniture, make sure to find a type that fits your long-term goals and budge.

Clean Up!

The end of summer is an essential phase for gardening and lawn care. During the first weeks of fall, the days are still sunny and dry – an unmissable opportunity to tend the garden and get it ready for winter. To do so, start by storing away your tools and machinery, covering and securing your trees and plants, and raking the leavesThese simple actions can help you prepare your garden for spring, avoid pests and diseases, and create a streamlined design for your fall garden.

Provide Heating and Blankets

Nothing says fall like making s’mores over a fire. To make your yard time extend into cool weather you need warmth added with fire pits and/or an outside heater.  Take a cold patio to another level with warmth and comfort by adding heating and a blanket or throw on your seating.

Work on Your Outside Room

I’ve written before about creating an outside space to socialize.  Personalize it with the seating, throws, heating, a possible cover, a grill or oven, and even a hot tub. You can turn a bland lawn into a beautiful space to hang out with friends, make memories with your loved ones, and enjoy some peace and quiet. You can make a plan and start with what you have. Each year you can then add to the room until you reach your goal of the perfect outdoor room for family and friends.

It’s All About Lighting

Several weeks ago I discussed LIghting Ideas For The Garden.  The outdoor lighting you choose is what truly makes or breaks the atmosphere. With the right lighting, you can create a bistro-inspired ambiance, a fairytale-like garden, or a romantic space for you and your other half. Make sure to pick the right outdoor lighting to improve the beauty and energy efficiency of your garden.
