DIY Cone Christmas Trees

Over the last few years, I’ve seen a variety of crafted Christmas trees. Many crafters start with a bought cardboard or styrofoam cone tree and decorate it. Some trees are made with a heavy paper cut in a half or quarter circle and folded to make a cone.  They can be made with cardboard from cereal boxes, construction paper,  heavy gift wrapping paper, or even heavy scrap book paper.

It’s time for Christmas in July!  Last week I shared my madeover vintage lamp which used some textured aluminum wall covering. After I used that small piece on the lamp, I still had most of the roll left.  The wall covering is a thin PVC paper with aluminum on one side.  It looked like it would be perfect for silver Christmas trees. Due to its stiffness, I do not have to buy any cone shapes and I’m using something I’ve already paid for.

Most blogs with the DIY steps start with a circle or half circle.  You can use something round to trace on the backside of your paper.  You could also use a pencil compass to draw a half circle.   I’ve seen several crafters who drew a small quarter on a corner of the paper. Below is a photo from Curbly.com where a pencil compass was used in a corner to draw a quarter circle and then was cut.  This would make very small trees unless the paper is huge. I used a half circle for fuller trees.

First I a made a small tree with a small piece of wall covering left over from my vintage lamp makeover.   I placed a dinner plate on the piece and it covered half the covering making a perfect half circle.  I traced around the half of a plate and cut it out.

I turned the covering over and decorated it with random pearls from Dollar Tree.  Stay away the edges where you must glue it.

I put sticky tape on the back edge and started curving to make a cone. You can adjust as you need.

If necessary, cut off and adjust bottom front of cone. Sometimes the front is too long.  Then I glued several pearls together and glued to top of little tree.

I made two plain trees by tracing a large lid on covering and cutting a nice large circle.

Then I folded the circle in half and cut at the fold.  I then folded and glued to make two silver trees.

My large tree was made by drawing a half circle on the back of a covering using the whole width of the paper.  I folded and glued without decorating as I wanted to do a pearl design on the “front of the cone.”  I started a design of a 4-pearl clusters in a column down the “front”.

I added a few random pearls around the cone and topped the tree with a large pearl cluster I had glued together.

It makes a nice vignette in silver and white for Christmas.

Thanks for the visit. I hope you enjoyed my crafting Christmas in July ideas, and the projects have inspired you!

  1. I doubt if I’ll ever feel Christmasy again with all the problems this builder has created for us. Maybe by December I’ll feel better. Sorry Carol. I’m just down right now.

  2. Very pretty decorations, Carol. I have made something similar with cardboard, green moss, and mini pinecones for a forest appearance. They can ve made in so many decorative combinations
