New Single Red Hibiscus

Tropical Hibiscus, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis: Tropical hibiscus grows permanently in the landscape in warmer U.S. Dept of Agriculture  zones 9 through 11, unless they are taken indoors in winter. Outdoors, one freeze – below 25 degrees Fahrenheit – will kill them   A hibiscus flower usually has five petals (a single hibiscus).

Recently I purchased 4 new tropical hibiscus. Several weeks ago I shared my two beautiful new yellow single hibiscus plants.  My two red hibiscus were $7.98 each  which is a wonderful deal.  Today we’ll look at my new single hibiscus in red and compare it to my older established double hibiscus. (Double hibiscus have multiple layers of petals for a ruffled look.)

My double red hibiscus is a small deep red flower.  I planted it about 5 years ago.

My new single red hibiscus I’ve put in a ceramic pot by the front porch.  The flower is large and a lighter shade of red.

I picked a double hibiscus and placed it next to a single hibiscus flower.  The single hibiscus is almost double the size.

I love both of them, but I’m really enjoying my new plants.  I have flowers almost daily by the porch.

  1. Hibiscus flowers are gorgeous! It is obvious that you love them; that you love flowers.
I wish you a beautiful Sunday!

  2. Your red hibiscus is so beautiful. I love color, any color with any flower. I think it makes the home so beautiful. With all the mess I still have with this new home, this should have been fixed by now but I’m trying to put colorful flowers in the front of my garage and the front of the window. Good job Carol.

    1. oh do take a photo later and share it with me – you know how much I love flowers — Happy Sunday Paul

  3. I also love Hibiscus in any color! I can’t leave them outside here in Iowa so I have over-wintered them in our garage for 3 or 4 years. This year one of them didn’t survive. But the other one is growing well. It’s pink and the flowers are always bigger than y hand. And they are worth they effort of protecting them thru-out the winter!!

  4. Carol,
These are stunning!! I never tried growing them but will have to look into it for our region and temps. Thanks so much for stopping by!!
    Hugs,
    Debbie

  5. These are beautiful., especially the yellow. I have pink and blue hibiscus but they haven’t started flowering yet. We had such a cold wet spring that everything is flowering late this year.

  6. What a great deal on hibiscus plants! They are so beautiful. My son has quite a few growing in pots around his house and I always love to take photos of them. I don’t get enough sun in my yards to grow them well/

    1. I have the opposite problem – a full sun yard. Lots of plants fry in the Florida sun but not hibiscus.

  7. I live just outside of San Francisco – it just might be me – but I cannot grow hibiscus. I’ve tried a few times and I’ve killed enough of them. So I stop trying.

    1. I’ve killed quite a few plants in my full Florida sun yard and that is why I keep buying hibiscus – they don’t die but love the sun. Maybe your yard needs a different plant.

  8. Carol – why choose a favorite when you can love them both? I share your love of plants, and having something always in bloom makes my heart sing! Thanks for linking to Mosaic Monday!

  9. My one hibiscus plant still hasn’t bloomed (New York State) but I am enjoying yours. I like them both but must admit, I like the single one better. But again, doesn’t really matter, both are beauties!

I love to make new friends and get to know you.
