Dogwood Egg Carton Flowers

I’ve pinned pretty egg carton flower crafts for a few years.  This year I’m trying to make more of my inspiring pins.  First I thought I would use paper egg cartons which seems to be the favorite among crafters.  You can paint them any color.  Then I saw a neighbor throwing away colored styrofoam egg cartons in white, pink, and yellow.  (Our county does not accept styrofoam in recyclables.)  Hmm, okay I decided to rescue the styrofoam and give it a try.

Now I needed to decide what kind of flower I wanted to make.  I’ve seen pretty tulips and daffodils made from egg cartons.  I love them both. Then I looked at the pink carton and decided I would try using it to make dogwood flowers.  Dogwood season in Tennessee was one of my favorite spring events during my childhood. Flowering dogwood is one of the most beautiful eastern North American trees with showy early spring flowers, red fruit, and scarlet autumn foliage.  I looked at photos of all kinds of dogwood flowers.  Some are white, some are pink, and some are a mix of white and pink.  Although a darker pink than the pastel egg carton, this photo is my inspiration:

Dogwood petals are almost circular in shape and have that little notch at the end.  I started cutting out petals from a pink egg carton using one egg cup.

I kept trimming to make a more circular petal and then added a notch.  I cut into the bottom of the cup to make a smaller center.

I used a small brush to paint the center white. Then I used a dry brush to feather the paint from the center out on each petal.  Next I cut a small flat strip from the flap on the yellow egg carton.  I then cut along one long edge multiple times.

I folded the strip and glued it.

Finally I glued it to the white center of dogwood flower.

After making 3 flowers, I glued them to a faux wood Dollar Tree frame.

It’s an easy, fun craft for a new piece of spring decor.

  1. I love the flowers you made out of foam egg cartons. I’ve been saving foam egg cartons too – and looking around to see what’s been made. Yours is one of the prettiest I’ve seen! I had been planning to make flowers with them but never got around to it! Thanks for inspiring me to get going. You’ve set the bar really high in making yours. Great job, Carol!

    1. You’re too kind Gail. It’s a real treat to have such a nice compliment from a great crafter like you. Thank you!

  2. So far I have not come across styrofoam egg cartons here but we have plastic and paper cardboard cartons. You are very creative coming up with such nice idea using the styrofoam to make flowers. The flowers very pretty.

  3. These look so great. I love how the yellow middles suddenly make them look really realistic. We used egg boxes to make poppies last year for Armistice Day. #MMBC

  4. What a great way to recycle the Styrofoam containers. Your flowers turned out great. Pinned.

  5. Dogwoods are one of my favorite flowers. They should be blooming soon here! ‘Very clever to make them with egg cartons! pinning -Marci @ Stone Cottage Adventures

  6. Wow! You are so creative and talented. I love how you repurposed those egg cartons rather than throwing styrofoam into the landfill. Beautiful!

  7. Your flowers are such a pretty outcome from upcycling egg cartons and they show up so well on your wood frame. Great spring inspiration, for sure!

I love to make new friends and get to know you.
