For the last few years there have been lots of decorations with cotton bolls. Cotton is grown in 17 southern states stretching across the bottom half of the United States: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. I remember the first time I saw a cotton field from our car as my family drove west across Tennessee to Memphis. It was a remarkable sight, a field filled with white cotton bolls. Now buying real bolls for decorations can be expensive if you don’t get them locally.
Last month I found cute faux cotton boll stems at Walmart complete with burlap leaves. I bought several as they were not only attractive but also inexpensive. Now what can I do with them? Several years ago I bought a medium size faux white pumpkin at Walmart and have used it in vignettes. This year I was wanting to try adding flowers. I’ve seen them painted on, and I’ve also seen beaded flowers on a faux pumpkin. One night right as I was nodding off in the dark, my mind said let’s put cotton bolls on the pumpkin. When I woke up and walked into the kitchen-dining room, I saw that faux pumpkin and remembered my sleepy thought. I got 2 sprays of cotton bolls with burlap leaves, a small bouquet of small flowers, my faux pumpkin, and my hot glue gun. I covered the table with an old towel for protection.
First I removed the cotton bolls and burlap leaves from the stems. I also removed the little flowers. Second I glued the small flowers into the center of the cotton bolls. Now I have cotton and flowers to put on the pumpkin.
Then I glued the cotton boll to the pumpkin close to the top. Since the plastic pod puts the boll at an angle, I put another little flower over it. Pretty. I put the second boll a little above the first and added a small flower above it. The third boll was placed a little lower like the first one. I alternated a little up and a little down around the pumpkin.
It’s like a cotton and flower crown. Now to make it more rustic, I glued each burlap leaf going down the pumpkin lower than the bolls. I am really pleased it came out so well.
For now it’s on the dining table, and I’m really happy with the look.
Thanks for the visit!
