Slow Cooker Swiss Steak

Today I’m going back to my slow cooker to cook a delicious meal without spending hours in the kitchen. If you’ve never heard of swiss steak, it is a recipe that has been around for decades.  Swiss steak is made by braising, or slow-cooking a tougher cut of meat like round steak. The meat is traditionally tenderized by pounding with a mallet before slow cooking.  My mother always used cubed steak which does not need pounding. My recipe calls for cubed steak, but pounded round steak is great too.   First we’ll brown the meat and then add it to the crock pot with sauteed vegetables to simmer and make a mouth-watering tomato sauce.  You can adjust the vegetables to meet your family’s needs.

It’s perfect for a busy day.  Spend about 20 minutes preparing the ingredients, put in the slow cooker, and let it cook.  In the evening enjoy a filling meal of Swiss Steak in tomato sauce with vegetables.  It is perfect over rice, pasta, or even mashed potatoes.  It goes great with a side of green beans or other green vegetables.

  1. Hello,

I have heard of Swiss Steak but never tried making. Using the crock pot/slow cooker is very easy and delicious. Thank you for sharing the recipe! Take care, enjoy your day! Wishing you a happy new week!

  2. This is so funny, I remember my mom making this but I never did! (Of course crockpots were unheard of when she made it). I cant even imagine why I never made this thrifty and filling and delicious dish for my family. But I think I will for the two of us !

  3. Nice recipe Carol. It has all the right ingredients. We used to do a very similar this regularly but it rather went out of favour but I’m not sure why. We must try it again now.

  4. Haven’t had Swiss Steak in years.
I will be turning 71 next month, so it’s nice to see these older recipes brought back to the present
I remember as a young newly wed (51 years ago) that I would make 2 large hamburgers from 1lb. of meat (hamburger steaks or large hamburgers) and made a sauce somewhat like this and served with homemade steak fries.

    1. I’m a year older than you and I had a mother who was a good cook. I agree food goes in and out of fashion like everything else. We should enjoy the foods we like whether new or old but let’s face it, the old brings back good memories. Your hamburger steak sounds delicious. I’m ready to come over and share it with you. Have a great Wednesday!

  5. It has been a long time since I made a Swiss Steak. The crock pot idea is a winner!
