For quite a few years, I wore a cute blue 4th of July summer sleep shirt. It is a dark blue with a cute embroidery decoration on the front. When I could no longer use it, I put it aside planning to make a patriotic decoration one summer. This past January when I was purging and organizing my craft supplies, I made a promise to myself that I would use or lose lots of old items I’ve saved for crafts. Today’s simple craft is based on my old night shirt and an embroidery hoop.
I have an 8.5 inch embroidery hoop which is a perfect size for the embroidered expression: BE FREE.
I cut the shirt front to have a nice large piece of material to fit to the hoop. I placed the material in the hoop and adjusted it until I was satisfied.
I cut a circle around the hoop and then glued the edge of the material to the back of the hoop. I have a bag of acrylic red gems and velcroed them to the rim of the hoop.
Then I glued a red and white bowed strip of ribbon at the bottom of the hoop.
Finally I glued and pinned a red white and blue ribbon I got last year at the dollar store. I used 2 red acrylic gems in the middle of the ribbon to top the hop.
It’s ready for the wall.
It upcycles a vintage shirt, and I only used supplies I had on hand to create a fast and simple new DIY patiotic wall decoration.
Now let’s go to a little blog party for Summer Crafts.
Today I’m joining some of my blogging friends sharing summer crafts.

This is such a lovely upcycle! What a fab way to use up unused clothes. Now you are all ready to celebrate the 4th July in style!
thanks – it really get me in the mood for sure – Happy Tuesday!
I have been doing the same, of trying to use up what and create with what I have. I learned I have things, I had no idea I even had. So pretty and patriotic. Embroidery hoops work for so many things- this is great!
thanks Jenny – I just reached a point where I couldn’t save anything else until I got rid of things; sort of too much of a good thing. Happy Wednesday!
Such a great idea! I love being able to reuse items.
What a fun and festive upcycled craft! That was a very clever idea to use the embroidered section of your sleep shirt. I love learning new ideas for crafting! Pinned.
What a great way to upcycle a shirt. I have a few shirts that are past their prime but I haven’t wanted to get rid of them yet. This would be a great way to upcycle them.
I really didn’t want to lose the little be free embroidery and it was easy to make wall decor.
