Winter Decor Transition

We’re now in that awkward time when all the holidays are over.  The tree, lights, and beautiful holiday decor are put away for another year.  If you’re like me, it can all seem pretty blah about now. My family left last week after a long holiday visit and I am in high gear to refresh my decor.  I usually like to stick with red in my January living room and dining area.  Sometimes I use deeper shades of cranberry or maroon. This year I’m going with red in the living room and the deeper colors in the dining room.

First let’s start in the dining room.  I looked at my holiday picture ledge in the dining room .  (above)  The popcorn garland was removed several weeks ago as the cranberries withered.  The flower stag art is still appropriate for January, but I need some changes to refresh the room.

Even though snow covered pine cone trees are part of winter, I’d like to rotate that with a new look.  To the right of the print I put my carved pelican.  I had a cranberry thrift store shirt and I cut strips of material from the sleeves with pinking shears.  I’ll use the rest for another project.  I tied the strips in a knot on a small ribbon to form a small country rag garland.  I hung it on the hooks to the sides of the picture ledge.

On the left side of the art, I added a small vase filled with purple Wandering Jew vines from the yard.  I like to take cuttings to root to add back to the yard.

Remember I’m in Florida so I still have flowering vines.  Even in the north, you probably have evergreens in your garden.  I do not think this look is limited to Christmas.  Greenery is appropriate for winter and if you want, you could add a flower or 2 to the vase.

In the corner of the dining room, I added a vintage ginger jar.  On the wall, I added my chalkboard and a country heart.

The dining table now has a centerpiece of a round scarf and a hobnail milk glass vase with maroon and white flowers .  I like the look; it feels cozy.

You may not remember or know,  but last year I bought a vintage maple dining table at a thrift store. It is in excellent condition.  I used round table clothes in the fall, and during the holidays, I added one of the two leaves for a larger table.  This month I am loving the beautiful wood.  I really love round tables and have been looking for one to replace my old table for the last year. It is one of my best buys.

I love the garland and plan to make more for each season so I can have a choice of garlands to fit my picture ledge.

In the living room, the changes are easy to make.  I’m going with my black and white buffalo check pillows on the futon with the addition of my red velvet pillow in the middle.

On the table on the left side of the futon, I’ve used my chest of faux houseplants with red flowers added.  I exchanged my art for my mirror. Then I added my conch shells.

To the right of the futon is a perfect example of real and faux plants together.  I added faux red roses to my real houseplants. I change flowers for each season in my container of real green plants. They require little light and I can put them anywhere. A red and white thrift store wreath is above the stand.

On the small white table between the living and dining areas are a vase of red tulips on a red crocheted doily and my foxes print on the wall.

I like using bright red during the winter months as it is cheery and easily transitions to February and Valentine’s Day.  Have a beautiful day!

    1. Yes that is one of the things I like about blogging. I retired and could not just watch TV or read. I like to use my mind and create. Thanks for the visit Tom!

  1. That garland is super cute and it is my new idea of the day! I love how it looks, how easy it was and that country feel. Now I need to scour the basement for suitable garland-making things!

  2. Red white and black (with grey) is my favourite colour combination! 🙂 Lovely decor ideas, Carol. Thanks for sharing them. P.S. I tried signing up using a different email address and eureka! I got a new post notification. ? Hope it continues to work.

  4. Your transition decor looks fresh and clean. The changeable garland is a good idea. I’m from Tennessee too, but I live in the South Carolina Lowcountry now.

    1. Thanks for the sweet comment Kristie. I love meeting new folks and I hope we visit each other often. Which part of Tennessee are you from? I grew up in East Tennessee, Oak Ridge, outside of Knoxville. I moved to Florida when I was in my 20’s. The Lowcountry is a lovely area but I haven’t had a chance to explore it. Have a great day!

  5. The rag garland is brilliant Carol! I made a rag wreath the same way and it turned out great.
I love your winter decor, thanks so much for sharing it with us. 🙂
