Key West, Florida – the name makes me think of beautiful coral reefs, Ernest Hemingway, Audubon House & Garden, conch fritters, conch chowder, Key lime pie, and of course beautiful sunsets. My first visit to Key West was during my vacation in 1977 that convinced me I was moving to Florida. Key West is a relaxed community which is a tourist haven all year long.

Key West is an island that is part of the Florida Keys archipelago. It’s also Florida’s southernmost point, lying roughly 90 miles north of Cuba. Famed for its pastel-hued, conch-style houses, it’s a cruise-ship stop also accessible from the mainland via the Overseas Highway. It’s known more for its coral reefs, diving and snorkeling, than for its beaches. The island is a little larger than 7 miles.

There are many things to do and experience in Key West, but today we’re visiting an enchanting attraction, The Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory. It is filled with an impressive collection of flowering plants, colorful birds, cascading waterfalls and trees that set the stage for the “flowers of the sky”, the 50 to 60 exotic butterflies from around the world. There are also more than 20 exotic bird species, all under a climate controlled, glass enclosed habitat. There is a learning lab for those wanting more information about butterfly anatomy, physiology, life cycle, feeding and the migratory world of the Monarch. Also you can get a rare close up view of a variety of live caterpillars feeding and developing on their host plants.

Do I remember the names of the butterflies and birds? No but that isn’t my goal. I just love experiencing the beautiful environment filled with ponds, turtles, butterflies and birds. I have to remind myself that I need to take photos.

Carol

I was raised in Tennessee but have lived in Florida for many years. Love my small home in the Tampa Bay area and its developing garden. My decorating style is eclectic - some vintage, some cottage, all with a modern flair. Pursuing a healthier lifestyle. Spent many years in social services but am happily retired.

  4. Carol – this is a delight from start to finish. I would probably spend an entire day there, because there would be so much that I love – flowers, birds, butterflies! I can’t imagine getting that close to a flamingo – what a delight. I have to admit that it made me think of Alice in Wonderland and the game of croquet with flamingos … I think! Thanks so much for sharing this tropical delight with everyone at Mosaic Monday!
