Wood Storks in the Neighborhood

The wood stork is a large American wading bird in the stork family Ciconiidae. It was formerly called the “wood ibis”, though it is not an ibis. It is found in subtropical and tropical habitats in the Americas, including the Caribbean.

It’s still warm and beautiful here in Florida. Over by my friend’s house on the lake, lots of birds come to visit.  Today’s photos are of a couple of wood storks in her yard.

We all kept away and let them graze and look around.   Amazing.

Carol

I was raised in Tennessee but have lived in Florida for many years. Love my small home in the Tampa Bay area and its developing garden. My decorating style is eclectic - some vintage, some cottage, all with a modern flair. Pursuing a healthier lifestyle. Spent many years in social services but am happily retired.

  1. Hi Carol, I’m glad to see that you didn’t suffer too much damage in the recent storms. Your garden birds are so much more interesting than ours. Saying that the dogs would soon chase storks off into the sunset!

    1. I doubt the storks would land with dogs around. My garden has no stork visits but I don’t live on the water. Sigh.

    1. No need to fear – they were just curious, looked around, and left. They’re too afraid to get close to people which is a good thing.

    1. It hadn’t happened before at my friend’s place – they ususally stay more in the wild. That’s why we were excited. You just stay a good distance and see something very unique. Then they’re gone in a blink of an eye.

    1. There was nothing aggessive in their behavior. They looked around and said let’s get out of here. Too many people.

  2. We have lots of wood storks on our lakes too and pelicans, among others! Always fun to see. Happy Sunday!

  3. What a treat to have storks parking in one’s yard! Have only seen them from far:) Lovely you shared it for All Seasons with us, Carol! yes, here it is still nice weather too:)

  4. The one perched on the porch railing is HUGE! I think it’s wonderful this type of bird just likes to wander around the neighborhood!

  5. That wood stork looks like a kid wearing a Halloween mask. I’ve never seen a wood stork before now.

We are learning about birds today at my Master Naturalist class. I shall have to report that I saw a wood stork today. Well, I did.

  6. What a BEAUTIFUL old Florida neighborhood!! It reminds me of the street I grew up. Of course, it is almost completely taken over by McMansions now.
Thanks for sharing your lovely area!
