Dune Sunflower Mini Bouquet

Dune Sunflower AKA Beach Sunflower is a fast-growing ground cover native to central Florida.  It is a highly salt-tolerant plant that thrives in sandy, well-drained soil in full sun. It can be found growing naturally on sand dunes and with native vines and grasses. Back 4 years ago, a friend gave me some Dune Sunflower seedlings which I planted around the yard.  Under adequate growing conditions, it becomes a shrubby ground cover of about two to four feet tall.  I didn’t realize how big the little seedling would get and it started taking over my yard. In the fall I removed the plants, but  I  still get little babies coming up. I remove most of them.  The one I let stay grows into a huge mound of flowers.  Today I’m sharing a little mini-bouquet of little Dune Sunflowers with greenery from the yard.

They are so bright and cheerful.  They will continue to propagate and grow 12 months out of the year.

  1. That’s so pretty. You’re very clever knowing how to arrange it to look nice. Whenever I try it just looks like I’ve dumped them in a vase. #MySundayPhoto

  2. oh it is so pretty. I wonder if it would grow here in Texas? I have the perfect sandy spot that gets full sun and
need something hardy. Thanks for sharing this. I wonder if the seeds are available to order?

    1. I’m not sure about availability – I was given the seedlings back 4 years ago. They reseed profusely and will take over your yard. They will not stay put but they are hardy and when we had that terrible frost in January it wasn’t fazed. The same plant just much bigger with a gizzion babies. ok I found this online source and the plant is similar to mine but not exactly. I understand there is an east coast (florida) and west coast variety. I have west coast and this could be east coast. Good Luck!

  3. Hi Carol, sunflowers are my favourite type of flower, they are such happy flowers. Your little dune sunflwoers look lovely. It’s a shame we don’t get them growing here.

      1. Oh I do!… We have the prettiest sea daffodils that grow in the sand dunes here. They are a protected species and I can’t help but think how lucky we are to be able to enjoy them.

Thank you for linking up with #keepingitreal.

        xx

  4. They do look like sunflowers! The things you learn! Have a great week and hope the flowers help you to keep a great mood.

  5. Those are beautiful. I kill everything I grow but I would love to try those!

  6. What a beautiful little display! It is very ‘happy’ looking!
