My Patriotic Planter

For the last few years, I update my planter of green household plants for seasons or holidays.  This can be done with any household plant even small ones.  Just use small picks or ribbons to decorate for the season.  You can collect most of what you need at the Dollar Tree.

I started with my planter emptied of all decorations and holding only the live green plants. I removed any dying stems and cleaned up the pot.  When necessary, I replace plants.  When the vine grows too long, I cut off a strand, root in water, and then replant in pot to keep it full.

I started adding flowers – white, a little blue, some red. I had some patriotic picks in my stash which I bought last year at Dollar Tree.

I moved them around until I had a pleasing arrangement, and then placed the planter on a dollar store  bandanna on the table.

Later I will move it to the small side table between the dining and living room.

I’ve changed the decorations in the live greenery every season. Same planter – different looks.

  1. Good idea, Instead of getting all new seasonal stuff, just enhance what you’ve got already . Btw, my porch is all red/white/blue this summer and my zinnia are red with white allysum all around

  2. That’s a great idea Carol. I constantly have floral arrangements in vases all around my house. I try to take everything out of my garden…so they are seasonal. It’s amazing just how much is out there and it’s a fun project to do. Have a great week and thanks for sharing 😀

    1. Your garden is wonderful – love the little squirrel. I bring flowers from my yard also but many of garden flowers are not good cutting flowers. They only last a day on the plant or in a vase.

  3. I love the use of the bandana – Thanks for sharing at the Pleasures of the NW’s DIY link party!

  4. This is a great example of using faux flowers along with real, living plants. Your arrangement looks so full and so pretty after you added things to your basic planter. It’s a great patriotic tribute for the summer season.

  5. I love projects that are time friendly and budget conscious. This one fits the bill! Thank you for sharing with us this week at Celebrate Your Story, and I hope your week is going great.

  6. We don’t have a cutting garden but I do love to make arrangements when I splurge on flowers at grocery store.
Your July 4th.decoration is so pretty and colorful, simple also, all things I enjoy. If I have to spend money don’t enjoy as much as decorations can make on my own. Thank heavens for $tree huh? Can get so many useful and decorative things there. Don’t mind spending a little there but have to watch myself, it’s only a $ but a full cart makes for too many $’s, lol.
