I hope you had a wonderful Memorial Day. Company came to visit me for a long weekend which I thoroughly enjoyed.
Prior to the visit, I wanted to try adding red, white and blue for the holiday. I like to do things sweet and simple. I usually get into trouble when I complicate things. Have you ever heard of the KISS principle? I discovered it early in life.
K – Keep
I – It
S – Simple
S – Stupid
Inspired by so many posts about dollar store bandannas and wanting to keep it simple, I made two pillows for the patriotic look using red and blue bandannas from the dollar store.
I considered all red? red and blue reversible? I kept it simple and did one all blue and one all red. Sew two bandanas together around the edge or use iron on hemming tape. If you want to make a pillow cover that can be removed, leave the 4th side open and close with a zipper or velcro for no sew. I love making simple pillow covers; I put the velcro side at the bottom.
I changed the back pillows to deep red and off white – gives it a more farmhouse look.
The red and blue really pops against the white.
For my table I always like to start with a cotton tablecloth – this one is blue, white, and red plaid. Add a blue bandanna, a red jug, white plate and sea shells, I am ready for the flowers. I bought two small bunches at the local grocery store for my red, white and blue mix – including a red rose, red carnation, blue hydrangea, white lilies, and lots of baby’s breath.
My holiday company is leaving this morning, and now I must get back to several projects I started last week. I have moved furniture around in my second bedroom and now must decide what I will give away and what I will keep. Also, I am in the middle of a sewing project from new material I got at the thrift store. More to come on that later.
Have a blessed day!

Carol, this is the first time I’ve read about Dollar Store bandanas. Your pillows turned out fantastic. I’m going on the prowl at my local store soon, if you don’t mind me copykating your look. I try to stay with KISS, but I always end up too complicated. My plan is to do a rustic patriotic look that will work for me from Memorial Day through Labor Day by adding and subtracting as the Summer progresses into Fall. I’m your newest subscriber and Pinterest follower and will be snooping around your pretty blog often.
I usually go to Dollar Tree. They get new stuff weekly and I have fun checking it out even if I don’t buy anything. I like your decorating plans – sometimes just a small change can make a big difference. I am now following you too and on Pinterest. Thanks for the follow! Look forward to seeing your future posts.
Carol

Cute idea! I love the pillows. Thanks for joining the Family Joy link party this week!
Thanks
I think all of these are really cool — but the pillows — they blew me away!! I would love for someone to come along and make those for me, ha ha I really don’t think I have the skills to do these myself. You are talented; thanks for sharing.
I am not skilled and if I can do it, so can you. Sew the edges of 2 bandanas together on 3 sides. Put in pillow insert. Sew 4th side. Voila!
This is delightful idea, Carol. I love it! I don’t like to have too many seasonal decorations on hand due to space to store them but bandanas would be so easy. What a great idea. Sharing the love, Amy
Love the pillows! Love “K.I.S.S.”! Love the dollar store! 😉 This entire post is right up my alley because we have a red, white, and blue house. I am the least crafty human being ever to draw a breath of air, but I might have to try those pillows for the porch swing on the front of my red, white, and blue house! Pinning…and stopping by from Life Is Lovely.
They are simple and cute. Thanks for the visit.
Great crafts for the upcoming 4th!! Thanks for sharing on my 2 favorite Things on Thursday – link Party! Hope to see you again! Pinned!!
Thanks for the pin!
I never thought of going to the dollar store for bandanas–such a great idea! And I love the bandana layered on the plaid tablecloth.

I had heard about the bandanas at the Dollar Store, but wasn’t sure what the pillowcases would look like, I really like yours and they look great on the white futon cover. But I really love your centerpiece, the flowers look great, what a welcoming table!!!
Thanks Nikki. Hope your week is great.
Such great ideas! I love the pillows, and I have a ton of bandanas. I’m sure I have some red, white, and blue bandanas that I can make some pillows with.
Thanks, have a wonderful week.
