DIY Tray From A Frame

For the last few years I’ve been collecting inexpensive frames from thrift stores.  Some I have an immediate plan for use while others I put aside.  There are so many creative bloggers who inspire me.  One of my favorite upcycles I’ve seen is a frame to tray.  Today is my simple DIY tray from a photo frame using milk paint and adhesive contact paper.

This simple unfinished wooden frame came complete with a print, mats, and glass.  I like the size and shape. I removed the print and mats.  The frame seemed perfect for milk paint and a black and white print.

I applied several coats of white milk paint and let it dry.

I cleaned the glass and applied a self-adhesive plastic liner from Dollar Tree. I love this floral black and white print. It almost looks French country to me.

The finished tray looks great in the living room and in my guest bedroom with a mug of herbal tea.

I’m very happy with the result with such simple changes and for only $3.50.

  1. Hi Carol, Lovely work! I just wonder if the beautiful print on your tray is under the glass or on the surface.

    1. You can do it either way. Under glass leave the self adhesive paper on original backing and cut to fit under the glass. Over cut and peel and apply.

  2. Carol, your tray is perfect! It does have a bit of a French Country look to it and it looks wonderful! 🙂

  3. Love this! Who would have thought Dollar Tree would have such classy looking shelf paper! I’m going to have to add this to my must-do project list.

  4. Using a self adhesive plastic liner is a brilliant idea Carol. It makes the tray so much easier to clean up and that pattern is gorgeous. So timelessly elegant

I love to make new friends and get to know you.
